On various dates through spring, many countries advance time by one hour, creating locations where time is hidden, skipped over. These temporal discontinuities open gateways into our world which are visible only to those of us who can manipulate time and exist on both sides of the threshold.

A new moon and cloudy sky meant no light other than my torch. Without it, all was black, a giant void filled only by the susurrations of a gentle breeze disturbing some of the upper branches. I waited patiently through this hidden hour, with the mocking absence of any incursions provoking a growing feeling of despondency – in a few minutes I’d likely catch up to the rest of the world with nothing to show for my endeavour but trees and grass.
Then, to my left, a silence. A hole in the dark. A vacuum in the air. Imagination running wild, I quickly open the shutter and flick on my torch, nothing? There’s nothing there? Just trees and grass and the black abyss beyond. All is still and quiet save an untroubled swish of leaves above, and a reluctantly dwindling throb in my chest.
